Flute Academy 2024! Rhythms from around the World

  • 9:00 - Gabriela will coach us through a fun and educational warm up using underlying rhythms such as Jazz, Choro, Tango and Cuban Clave. In this exercise, she'll introduce octaves and long notes with the underlying percussive rhythm for each genre as well as the introduction of parts of a triad, assigning a note and a body movement for each student. In a circle, with the same underlying rhythms, students will be asked to play one note at a time with its specific body movement. Simple body movement and collaboration is a great way to learn new styles and rhythms!
  • 10:00 - We will work on these two Flute Choir pieces: Tico Tico no Fubá and Four Cuban Dances. Music will be provided at the event. However, those interested in having the music in advance can message: contact@gpfs.org.
  • 11:00 - There will also be a recital with two guitars, flute and percussion. Gabriela will play a concert with Peter Ziza and Pam Beaty that introduces the rhythms covered in the warm up as well as bring a connection to the music of J. S. Bach.

What is Flute Academy?

The GPFS sponsored Flute Academy in Salem is an annual event that brings together local students and teachers for a day of performing, workshops, recitals, playing together and a masterclass with a guest artist. The event will be held in-person again this year. Location is Chemeketa Community College, Building 6, Auditorium, 4000 Lancaster Dr NE, Salem, OR 97305. Click here for campus map.
